What is 'the cloud'?

In Information Technology, the term ‘the cloud’ means different things to different people in different industries. Basically, the cloud encompasses an incredibly broad range of software and hardware solutions. These use remote, large-scale datacentres to do the hard work while, typically, using the internet to deliver the results to the client. Some say that using cloud technology is rather akin to having your electricity generated by a power station rather than by your own generator in your back yard. In this analogy the benefits of cloud technologies are very similar. Clients don’t need to worry about paying for, and maintaining, their own servers or datacentres; they pay only for what they use through a regular billing arrangement – not unlike standard methods for paying for gas, electricity or broadband.

Datacentres are huge warehouses located around the world, often in remote locations, and are packed with containers comprising racks of servers. Some datacentres, like some of Microsoft’s (pictured), are almost entirely automated, with typically only a few staff in attendance.

There are many ways of creating and using cloud services, but for most small businesses, "public cloud" offerings, like those offered by Microsoft, provide a very compelling and cost-effective means of gaining the kinds of benefits that were formerly the exclusive preserve of much larger businesses.

Why is an independent company offering a range of web and cloud solutions, data migration, consultancy, and set-up and support services to small business clients. With over twenty years of IT experience, the company is well placed to work with your business to find the best benefits and cost savings offered by the latest technologies. prides itself on the quality of its products and services by maintaining high professional standards in all areas of its business. While delivering bespoke software solutions developed in-house, the Company also provides value-added services based only on trusted third-party products and suppliers that meet or exceed the rigorous standards we define. In turn, you can be assured that an solution will be the best answer to your business needs, both present and future.

Here are just a few of the standards that a cloud solution must meet before being recommended by

  • Datacentres must be certified as ISO 27001 compliant
  • All client data must be stored at least in the EU but preferably in the UK
  • Any data access over the internet must be transmitted over fully encrypted channels
  • Client data must be private, must remain exclusively in the client’s ownership and must never be used for data mining, research or advertising
  • Hosts must be clear, open and transparent about their datacentre locations, data traceability, security protocols and standards
  • Solutions must be flexible to suit a variety of business needs, and be manageable by the client
  • ‘Software as a Service’ solutions must offer an excellent user experience, both off and online, and provide hybrid solutions for cloud migration, security segregation and future-proofing
  • Solutions must make the best use of existing hardware and software investments and keep capital expenditure to an absolute minimum.
